February Is American Heart Month

After Buffalo Bills Safety, Damar Hamlin, suffered cardiac arrest during a live NFL game on January 2, 2023, awareness surrounding the need for AEDs has increased.  As February is American Heart Month, the timing couldn't be better.  According to our partners at Zoll Medical “Heart disease takes over 600,000 lives each year in the U.S. alone, making it the leading cause of death. With 24% of all American
deaths being linked to heart disease, it poses a real threat.”  Dr. Dennis A Cardone is an orthopedic surgeon and chief of the division of primary care sports medicine at NYU Langone Health.  His comments in regards to Hamlin's need for CPR and first aid care on the field echo our own sentiment - every business, school, facility should invest in the purchase of an AED machine and the proper training for emergency situations.  “Whether you’re a health professional or not, it’s important to feel somewhat comfortable with what to do in an emergency situation. We should all know how to do CPR and handle an AED (automated external defibrillator),” says Cardone.

What is an AED?

An AED is an automated external defibrillator and repricates the process of CPR.  Many people fear using an AED because they are not a doctor or trained medical professionals.  While we understand this concern, an AED is specifically built to "do all the work" and has systems put in place to only defibrillate as needed.  “AEDs are self-directing and won’t defibrillate without picking up the improper heart rhythm, or lack of heart rhythm. It’s really fool-proof. Once you put the paddles on the chest, it does all the work for you,” said Cardone.

Furthermore, because Emergent Safety believes in the lifesaving power of an AED so much, we offer CPR Certification services, so your staff can be adequately trained. If you would like some more information on our CPR Training services please contact your Emergent Safety Specialist or call Emergent Safety at 800-877-1390. Our partners at Zoll Medical state that "broad deployment of AEDs and increased bystander CPR could prevent as many as 50,000 deaths each year in the U.S.”
